This award-winning commercial project sits within Sense of Self, Melbourne’s newest and largest bathhouse and day spa. Designed to deliver a Roman-style communal bathing experience, the 7.8m x 2.3m concrete mineral pool was constructed inside a converted warehouse on the Collingwood–Fitzroy border — a location that presented unique engineering and access challenges.

The semi–out of ground structure was meticulously built above carefully drilled bored concrete piers, positioned close to existing warehouse walls to support the elevated pool shell. The design brief called for a warm, Mediterranean aesthetic, achieved through the use of 50x50mm Luna travertine-style waterline tiles and 50x50mm Antique Aqua tiles throughout the interior. Natural garden rocks, lush indoor planting, and travertine coping complete the grounded, earthy palette.

A defining feature of this bathhouse is the series of custom brass elements crafted to elevate the sensory experience — including a sweeping curved brass ladder, three brass water spouts, and the hero of the space: a dramatic full-width brass water curtain that spills gently across the pool.

To emulate the heat and luxury of traditional European bathhouses, the pool runs at a consistent 39°C, powered by a 400mj gas heater and controlled via full automation. The system also manages feature water elements, multicoloured LED lighting, and the MagnaPool® ‘no salt’ mineral system — chosen for its therapeutic qualities and gentler, more sustainable water chemistry.

With its soft colour palette, brass accents, statement tapware, and dramatic warehouse setting, the Collingwood Bathhouse reimagines ancient communal bathing for modern Melbourne. This project reflects Striking Pools’ commercial craftsmanship — combining precise engineering, thoughtful design, and a sophisticated wellness experience in one standout build.
